In 1790, farmers were 90% of the labor force. By 1890, farmers were 43% of the labor force. In 1990, farmers were down to 2.6% of the labor force. (Growing A Nation: The Story of American Agriculture). With the labor force of farmers dwindling down, Americans are becoming more and more detached from their food source. The media has been in charge of bridging this gap and providing the agricultural news to the public. However, with the way the media reports the news, perceptions can be developed and instilled into the minds of its viewers which can lead to significant consequences.

The ugly perceptions and images have given the American farmer a bad rap with little to go on. Instead, farmers are usually reacting instead of pro-acting. So why don’t we be proactive and tell our side of the story? Why not let the public hear it straight from the source rather than getting mudded by the middle man reporter? The AgChat Foundation is doing just that. “The AgChat Foundation is designed to help those who produce food, fuel, fiber and feed tell agriculture’s story from their point of view.” (AgChat Foundation)

Together, we’ll find the way to tell our side of the story!

With today’s technology, everyone is in the “know” realm. We have Facebook and Twitter accounts keeping us updated on friends and family, podcasts streaming directly on your phone to update us on the newest news, text updates of what the commodity markets are doing. When we turn on our TV to any one of the parent telecast news companies, we have one like streaming the latest sports updates, the line above stating what the DOW is reading and which of the big name stock companies is on the rise or downfall, and a news anchor reporting the latest news.

But what really makes a story newsworthy? If you Google “define: news”, top definitions include “1. Newly received or noteworthy information, especially about recent or important events. 3. Information not previously known to someone.” The media is constantly looking for the newest arising conflict, disaster, and human interest. Many times, agriculture is in the news whether we recognize it can be another question. For example, HSUS provides advertisements of the abuse of animals. Americans then start to believe that this is how all animals are treated across the U.S. creating human interest and conflict against the people who are providing America with food. Another recent example, recent reports have stated that approximately 25% of meat inspected at 5 grocery stores contained flesh eating bacteria that are resistant to medication. Later the story was amended because this bacterium is killed when the meat is cooked according to its label directions.

With the news media on the constant look-out for newest and best stories, the gossip can over-take the facts. Together, let’s find the way to keep “advocating” for agriculture with the facts.

In the good times, we often forget about our financing options. Consumers tend to simply settle. We might not strive to get that lower interest rate or to visit with our Accountant regularly to structure our finances that are most beneficial to us. To put it simply, we forget to take advantage of a healthy market.

But when the tough times come around, everyone feels the stress. We want lower interest rates with lower payments; our Financial Statements don’t seem quite up to par while our taxes are too high because we didn’t bother visiting with our accountant.

At Verity, we don’t offer to just settle. We want to help our customers grow their business. That’s why we have our Business Relationship Manager’s at the producer’s disposal. They help plan during the good times for the bad times.

What are Verity’s recommendations? Go see your Business Relationship Manager. He will help you plan your financing. Go see your Accountant and not just during Tax time. By visiting with your Accountant regularly, you can be assured your Tax Returns and Financial Statements are in your best interest. By ensuring your Tax Returns and Financials are set up correctly, the Business Relationship Manager’s will be able to give you the best financing options possible. After all, with the market forces and cycles constantly changing with the volatile market, you need to have finance stability. Whether we are in good times or bad, together “we find the way.”

The family farm holds a special place in family members’ hearts. Transferring the family farm treasures to the next generation can lead to hard, family conflicts. But the transferring of these items is inevitable and will occur at some point and unfortunately, estate planning doesn’t happen until it’s too late.

Ignoring the estate issue will not make it go away. In many cases, not having a plan destroys families. The emotion tied to the family farm and its cherished possessions are extremely high. In the article entitled “Who Gets Grandma’s Pie Plate?” the University of Minnesota Extension Service provides a good outline on Financial Security for later in life. This article gives “Six Factors to Consider”:

Understand the sensitivity of the issue of transferring non-titled property.

Determine what you want to accomplish in the transfer.

Decide what is “fair” in the context of your family.

Understand that belongings have different meanings for different individuals.

Consider distribution options and consequences.

Agree to manage conflicts if they arise.

Not convinced you need to go start your Estate Planning?? Watch and listen to a few stories Ron Hanson, a Professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, shares in this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWKPRJQ8MrE

Consumers are becoming more detached from their agricultural roots. In 1862, President Lincoln signed legislation which established the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He referred to this department as “The People’s Department.” Why? Ninety percent of Americans were farmers. Currently, less than two percent of Americans are farmers. Throughout many generations, Americans have become farther detached from agriculture. This is why an organization from California began.

Consumers do not understand how their food is grown, the precautions taken and the work involved. Without our farmers, we would have no food. William Jennings Bryan states ““Burn down your cities and leave our farms, and your cities will spring up again as if by magic; but destroy our farms and the grass will grow in the streets of every city in the country.” (Courtesy of Farm Policy Facts, http://www.farmpolicyfacts.org/index.php/real-facts/)

I Love Farmers -They feed my soul is an organization located in California that is making strong efforts in educating consumers. This educational organization was started because they felt the importance of how little consumers know where their food comes from and who produced it. This young organization has desires to educate consumers on animals and agriculture showing that producers care about the welfare of animals and the environment in which they grow crops. Check out their website at http://ilovefarmers.org/.
